Present Perfect: Past to Present

The present perfect can be used to express an action that began in the past and continues in the present. In this context, it is frequently used with the words for and since. For states the duration of the action, while since indicates when the action began.

Examples:
I began to smoke in 2004.
I have smoked for one year.
I have smoked since 2004.
(I’ve smoked for one year.)
He moved to San Antonio in 1995.
He has lived in San Antonio for ten years.
He has lived in San Antonio since 1995.
(He’s lived in San Antonio since 1995)
