Instructions. Fill the blanks with the appropriate form of the verbs in parenthesis. You can use modals when appropriate. In some cases, there is more than one possible correct answer.

1. The pool wasn’t open yesterday. If it (be) open, we (go) swimming.
2. You came to work late. If you (come-negative) late, the boss (get-negative) angry.
3. Mark didn’t have a job last year, so he couldn’t buy a car. He (be) able to buy a car if he (have) a job.
4. Karen didn’t know how to drive last year. If she (know) how to drive, she (buy) a car.
5. Nick didn’t have any free time last weekend. If he (have) some free time, he (go) out with his friends.
6. I didn’t remember Joe’s telephone number. If I (remember) his number, I (invite) him to our party.
7. Joe ate too much last night, and he got sick. If he (eat-negative) so much last night, he (get-negative) sick.
8. The bank was closed yesterday. I couldn’t make a deposit. If the bank (be) open yesterday, I (make) a deposit.
9. You didn’t pay attention in class yesterday. If you (pay) attention, you (fail-negative) the test.
10. John was tired this morning because he went to bed very late last night. If (go) to bed early, he (be-negative) so tired this morning.
11. Margaret wasn’t careful, and she lost her credit card. If Margaret (be) more careful, she (lose-negative) her credit card.
12. Bob was driving very fast last night. He had an accident. If he (drive-negative) so fast, he (get-negative) into an accident.
