1. Making Generalizations.
a. For singular count nouns, use a or an. A school has classrooms. An elephant is a mammal.
b. For plural nouns, do not use an article.
Schools have classrooms. Elephants are mammals.
c. For noncount nouns, do not use an article. Cheese contains protein. Sara doesn't like pizza.

2. References to Non Specific Nouns.
a. To refer to a non specific count noun, use a or an. Do you have a car? I'd like a cup of coffee, please.
b. To refer to non specific plural count nouns, use Some. The old house has some beautiful trees. Let's take some pictures when we go to the beach.
c. To refer to non specific noncount nouns, use Some. I have some rice at home. I would like some information about the English courses for this semester.

3. References to Specific Nouns.
a.To refer to a specific count noun, use the. The airport is busy during Christmas time. The sky is clear today.
b. To refer to specific plural count nouns, use the. The birds that I saw in the park were doves. The stores will be closed on Christmas day.
c. To refer to specific noncount nouns, use the. The weather today is not very good for outside activities. Did you find the information you were looking for?

There are a lot of animals in San Antonio. The other day, I was walking in park and I saw big bird on ground. At first, I wasn't sure what it was. As I got closer, I saw that it was hawk. I noticed that it was holding something. It had caught bird. bird was not dead yet because it was still moving. hawk did not fly away. It just stayed on the ground. I continued walking and was entertained by squirrels chasing one another. They appeared to be enjoying themselves. As I walked away, hawk was still on the ground holding bird.

Reading 2

Mrs. Henderson wanted to make beef stew for supper, so she went to store to get things. She bought package of carrots and potatoes. She also bought celery and canned vegetables. She thought she had everything for stew, so she paid for groceries and went home. As she pulled into driveway, she remembered. meat!. How could she have forgotten meat? After all, meat is the most important part of stew. She went back to the store and bought two packages of meat, one for stew and another to put in freezer. If she forgets to buy meat again, she will have an extra pakage in freezer.
